FEATURED RESEARCHER – MAY 2025

The Division of Research, Innovation and Linkages (RIL) at Machakos University is proud to feature Dr. Veronica Okello as the Researcher of the Month.

Dr. Okello, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physical Sciences, is the Principal Investigator of a research project titled:
“Biosorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics studies of fluoride and arsenic on nano‐enabled hydrochar and Fe‐based metal-organic framework hydrochar.”

Funded by the prestigious TWAS Research Grant (USD 47,000), this project seeks to develop green remediation solutions to address the growing environmental challenges associated with fluoride and arsenic contamination. The grant is also supporting the training of three MSc students and the acquisition of critical research equipment to facilitate high-quality scientific work.

In addition to this achievement, Dr. Okello will be leading a team to Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF) in Germany under the YEMAYA Project, which supports PhD student traineeships. Currently, Ms. Abisaki Esistasakha, one of the trainees, is undertaking a six-month research placement at TUBAF as part of this initiative.
